How to sew a stylish lettered improvisational quilt and Block 38, Anchor Point

New quilt pattern LET’S FLY from the DAY IN PARIS series

Let's start the new year with a new round of brand new quilt patterns, created for my upcoming fabric line DAY IN PARIS. This new collection is expected to arrive in stores by April 2019 (and I'm very proud, that this was Moda's fall market top collection).

The first pattern I'd like to introduce is called LET'S FLY, a lap size quilt 60" x 60".

The idea is a swarm of snippets accumulating in a focal point. I highlighted this point with a lettered saying, but you can just leave that out and insert more snippets instead.

I think the letters, the modern capital font, give the quilt that special modern something.

Technically this quilt looks quite simple, and actually it is not hard to do. But on the other hand, working with various angles, not 45°, can be tricky and need some clear instructions (which you find in the booklet of course).

The letters are simply appliquéd with an easy raw edge appliqué technique.

This quilt is easy to kit or get materials for: you need just some yardage for the background (I've chosen my beloved Bella Solid Zen Grey, hehe) and one Layer Cake (an assortment of about 42 fabric pieces each 10" x 10").

The Layer Cake gives you enough fabric for a great variety and also for any mistakes in cutting your angled snippets. Actually three Charm Packs would do the trick too, but the costs would be nearly the same and the left over from the Layer Cake makes for nice enhancements on the back or for a matching pillow.

To emphasize the modern character of this quilt I chose straight line quilting with a randomly rhythm and framed the letters in a stipple quilted square.

BLOCK 38
ANCHOR POINT

Last week we worked on Block 37 of our mutual Moda Blockheads 2018 (Round 2) sew along. This week we continue with block 38, Anchor Point, hosted by Lisa Bongean.

Lisa loves to create very intricate blocks, we like to tease her with pointing on some of her 6" blocks containing 50 and more pieces, hehe. Anchor Point is already kind of rough for what we are used to see from her ;-)

A 12" block with ONLY 65 pieces, hmm seems a bit too simple, girl (love you, just kidding)...

For her interpretation of the Blockheads' quilt Lisa has chosen a color scheme, which I like, because it is very close to the Zen Chic or Scandinavian style: a mix of neutrals with lights and darks in a nearly grey color scheme. See a couple of her blocks here.
